要旨
インターネットや携帯電話などの情報通信技術によって媒介されるオンラインの関係性は、社会関係資本論においても研究テーマのひとつとなっているが、オンラインとオフラインで社会関係資本の様態が異なりうる可能性は、あまり考慮されてこなかった。小林・池田（二〇〇五）はこの点に着目した数少ない実証研究であり、オンライン／オフラインの信頼・互酬性は、集団参加などについて異なる効果をもつことを明らかにしている。本稿は、その問題関心を引き継ぎ、二〇〇八年一〇～一一月に日本とアメリカでおこなったウェブ質問紙調査のデータをもとに、オンラインとオフラインの社会関係資本について分析した結果を報告する。
一般的信頼や互酬性などの尺度スコアは、日米ともにオンラインよりオフラインのほうが高い傾向にあった。社会関係資本にどのような属性が関連するかは日米で異なるが、それぞれの国においてオンラインとオフラインでも異なっている。オンラインとオフラインの社会関係資本の相関も中程度以下の水準にとどまる。また、オンラインの信頼や互酬性はオンラインでの関係性や活動に対して、同様にオフラインはオフラインに対して、もっぱら関連しており、オンラインでの社会関係資本がオフラインへ浸みだしていくような効果は認められなかった。これらの分析結果は、オンラインとオフラインでの社会関係資本が相対的に独立した様態をもつことを示唆するものと言えよう。
Abstract
In recent years relationships mediated by the Internet have been studied from the viewpoint of “social capital”, but a very few researchers have took into account the possibility that the conditions of on-line and off-line social capitals may differ. Kobayashi and Ikeda (2005) conducted a questionnaire survey focusing on its difference and found that on-line/off-line social capitals such as general trust and reciprocity have different effects upon on-line/off-line civic engagements and so on. In 2008 I conducted web-based surveys in Japan and the US containing questions about on-line/off-line social capitals.
The results showed that on-line general trust and two kinds of reciprocities were lower than off-line ones both in Japan and the US. Variables of gender, age, education and job had different relations to social capitals between the countries and also between on-line and off-line. Correlations between on-line and off-line social capitals were in middle range or lower. On-line trust and reciprocity had statistically significant effects almost solely upon on-line relationships and activities, and off-line upon off-line. This result means that on-line social capitals do not directly spill over into the off-line society. These findings as a whole strongly suggest that on-line social capitals have considerably different characteristics from off-line ones.
